THIS or THAT Episode 8: Is there any Other Option?

This year my theme for the #MyFriendAlexa campaign is “This or That”. Here, I’ll be putting up a day-to-day scenario that mostly all of us face sometime or the other, along with two different ways in which we can react towards those scenarios – either “This” or “That”. So, let’s look at today’s scenario!

_______________________________________________________________

Karan is very excited to be finally going home for Diwali. It had been 8 months since he last met his parents and his extended family to celebrate Holi together. Karan and Khushi have been married for 2 years and they always travel to Karan’s paternal house to celebrate all the festivals. As Karan chirpily kept thinking out loud about the things he would do once he reached home, Khushi sat there quietly packing her sarees and jewellery lost in her thoughts.

Karan: Are you even listening to me? Khushi? Khushi?

Khushi: Huh? Sorry, what?

Karan: Are you listening to me? Where are you lost yaar? What happened?

Khushi: Nothing, just.

Karan: Tell me. What’s wrong? What are you thinking about?

Khushi: Nothing, I was just taken back to the times when I spent Diwali at my parents’ place before marriage. I used to put up Diwali lights with daddy; mumma and I made delicious sweets and laddoos. And Chhotu and I often ate up laddoos while mumma wasn’t looking, and…and then there wouldn’t be any left when the guests arrived. It was so much fun. I wish I could become a kid once again, with no responsibilities to meet, at least on festivals.

Khushi wiped a tear as she got up to get her new set of bangles from the dressing table.

What do you think could Karan’s reaction be? Let’s look at the possible scenarios:

THIS:

Karan: Arey why are you getting so emotional? We’ll go to your parents’ place next month for sure. We keep visiting them once or twice every year no?

Khushi: Yes, but festivals are a different thing. It would be so nice if we could spend alternate festivals at each of our parents’ place. I feel a void during every festival.

Karan: Oh! come on Khushi! You know that’s not possible. What will we tell maa and baba? How can we not be with them on a festival as big as Diwali?

Khushi: Just like we’re not with my parents’ every Diwali, or Holi or any festival for that matter.

Karan: You know what I mean yaar. Don’t twist things now. And anyways when Chhotu gets married, he and his wife will also spend festivals with your parents na.

Khushi: No, I’ll make sure Chhotu’s wife doesn’t feel the way I’m feeling right now.

Karan: Ok, we’ll see next Diwali. Now please let’s finish packing and go to bed. We have an early flight to catch tomorrow morning.

Do you really feel there’s a practical “THAT” to “THIS” situation? I don’t.

  1. I think there is a THAT and that is Karan can talk to his parents and make them understand what Khushi’s feeling is and look for a solution rather than repeating the same story during every festival.

    1. I know there’s a way Shamik, but sadly I haven’t seen one being implemented. Hence I said I don’t think there’s a practical way out. I hope I get to see the “THAT” part soon someday. I’ll definitely complete my post that day😊

  2. Thought provoking!

I think it’s high time that a THAT option (similar to Khushi’s suggestion of spending alternate festivals at each of the parent’s house) should actually become mainstream

  3. Nitisha-Traditionally festivals are celebrated with Boy’s parents thats why you also don’t have any clue about THAT option ( probably first time in all your blogs), indicating your inclination towards following deep routed culture, which is correct.

But in family need to understand feelings of everyone. Some solution can definitely be brought in by mutual understanding and discussion. One Joyful solution may be – Both the parents and children enjoy festivals together.🎉☺️
