Time Travel

This post is a part of A-Z Challenge for bloggers, that takes place every year in the month of April. Bloggers take part in this challenge for self improvement and to overcome the “writer’s block”. Each one of us writes one article everyday, starting from the alphabet ‘A’, right up to ‘Z’. My theme for this year’s challenge is – mind-blowing facts and theories.

What is Time Travel?

The thought of moving between different points in time has been a popular topic for decades. The concept of moving through time into the past or the future is known as time travel.

Einstein’s theory of special relativity states that time slows down or speeds up depending on how fast you move relative to something else. Approaching the speed of light, a person inside a spaceship would age much slower than his twin at home.

So, is Time Travel Possible?

One possibility to travel through time could be by going faster than light, which travels at 299,792 kilometers per second (in a vacuum). However, Einstein’s equations, show that an object at the speed of light would have infinite mass and a length of 0. This appears to be physically impossible, although, some scientists have extended his equations and have said it to be made possible. However, these equations only show theoretical possibilities. We are still far off from applying them in practical.

Another possibility stated by NASA is to create wormholes between points in space-time. The wormhole theory assumes that a theoretical passages like bridges through space-time could create shortcuts for long journeys across the universe. These wormholes were predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity. However, no such wormholes have been found till date.

I don’t know whether time travel would bring something positive for the mankind and nature or just destroy it all. However, I can’t stop wondering how would it feel if we could travel back to correct some mistakes, or do things differently or just revisit the sweet memories. Humans have never failed to prove that “nothing is impossible”….so let’s see, if time travel could be made possible too some day.
